Mildred Degge Pike Kello

Mildred Degge Pike, born in 1895, was the second child born to Walter Raleigh Pike and Maria Bryan Degge Pike. Her sister, Ruth Virginia Pike, died at the age of 14 months, the year before Mildred was born. Her brother, John Clark Pike, was adopted in 1902. John was the son of her mother's sister, Mary Ella Degge Jones (who died in 1902), and her husband William Jones.

In 1912, at the age of 17, she married Robert Lawrence Cheek, and together they had one child, Myrtle Lucille Cheek born in 1913. Their marriage ended in divorce.

In 1920, at the age of 25, she married her second husband, Charles Wilson Kello, and together they had two sons, Charles Wilson "Duck" Kello, Jr. born in 1921 and Walter Clifton "Oddie" Kello born in 1926.

Mildred was creative and artistic, an accomplished pastellist and watercolorist. She loved to play the piano and to sew and crochet. She enjoyed gardening and having fresh flowers in her home. She also loved to fish, and knew how to skin a rabbit!

She was straight forward and direct and always true to her word. She never let you down.

Above all she loved her family and remained close to the many cousins of her childhood all of her life.

Mildred died in 1983 at the age of 88 and is buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia next to her husband and daughter.
