Marion was born in Spencer, Clay County, Iowa, the son of Franklin Hays and Lucy Isabella Chadwick, Franklin's second wife. He married Carrie (Carolyn) Reid in 1925 and they had 4 children: Marilyn, Elisabeth, Thomas, and Louis. After he compled his education at University of Chicago, The family moved to Los Angeles in 1944. He was a teacher and assistance headmaster at Harvard (-Westlake) School, North Hollywood. He died in Santa Monica, California
