Colonel Browne was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953. Graduating with the Class of 1957, he was commissioned into the Marine Corps. While a Midshipman, he rowed on the Navy heavyweight crew and was honored to be elected captain in 1957. He also earned a Master of Science degree from The George Washington University.
During his 30 years of active duty, Colonel Browne served in a variety of staff and command positions. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in all three Marine Corps Divisions, the U.S. Naval Academy, Office of the Secretary of the Navy, and on the staff of the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization in Bangkok, Thailand, before ending his career at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, where he retired in 1987. Throughout his retirement years, he was active in several outreach and nonprofit organizations.
Colonel Browne will be inurned at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions to a charity of choice may be made in his memory.
