Born in Popes Harbour, Halifax County, he was a son of the late James W. and Susan (Day) Abriel. He was a member of the merchant marine and served during the Second World War on cable ships. He was employed with Canadian National Railways, passenger service for 37 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Madeline Seffern; two sons, Robert Jr., Oshawa, Ont.; Jimmy, Bridgewater; daughter, Dale Barkhouse, Chester; brother, Maurice, Mahone Bay; seven sisters, Kathleen MacDougall, Margaret Savage, Cecilie Currie, all of Halifax; Elizabeth (Mrs. Martin Seaman), San Diego, Calif.; Jean (Mrs. Raymond Kew), Brockville, Ont.; Mary Parisien, Kingston, Ont.; Irene Renaud, Oshawa; five granddaughters; three grandsons. He was predeceased by six brothers.
