LAFAYETTE F. SAYRE was born 17 May 1848. He married 1st, 30 September 1869, NANCY HELEN LEWIS, who was born 29 April 1845 to William and Diana (Flowers) Lewis. Lafayette Sayre was a farmer in the Evans area of Jackson County. He served as Pvt. 20 February 1864-10 August 1865 in Company “D” 7th Cavalry Volunteers, wounded in action (leg broken). In an article on the David Sayre Branch in The Mountaineer, November 1939, Tommy Sewell wrote, “Nancy Lewis was a direct descendant, third removed, of General Andrew Lewis, who led forces at Pt. Pleasant 1774, a victory, and reconed by some historians as the first battle of the Revolution. The Lewis family was of the so called aristocracy or first families of Virginia. Mrs. D. F. Sayre of Ravenswood was a Lewis, so was Mrs. Lloyd Stone of Ripley. Kenna Kerwood of Ripley’s mother was a Lewis and the grandmother of Fred D. Wolfe of The Mountaineer.” Nancy (Lewis) Sayre died 4 August 1904. Lafayette married 2nd, in October 1907 a widow, SARAH (KESTER) BEATY, who was born 24 June 1849 and died 7 February 1921. Lafayette died 2 February 1934. Burial was in Otterbein Cemetery near Evans, Jackson, West Virginia. Children

2. BERTIE ALBERTA SAYRE, born 22 May 1873; married 23 December 1896 AUSTIN (“BUD”) SHINN. She died 14 January 1959. Burial was in Otterbein Cemetery.
3. WALTER C. SAYRE, born 5 August 1875; He died 8 September 1881.
4. WILLIAM WIRT SAYRE married MILLIE MAY SCHNELL.+
5. OTIS O. SAYRE, born 14 September 1879. He earned a high ranking as a school teacher. He died 26 February 1920. Burial was in Otterbein Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia.
6. JESSE WADE SAYRE married CORA ETHEL SKIDMORE.+
7. CHARLES MELVIN SAYRE married DELLA REYNOLDS.+
8. EDGAR EUGENE SAYRE married ZORA M. SAYRE.+
