Mayor of Salt Lake City. A member of the Democratic Party, she served as the 32nd Mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah from 1992 until 2000. She has the distinction of being the first and only female to date to serve at that capacity. She will perhaps be best remembered for securing the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Born in Rhode Island, she was raised and schooled in Lebanon and Syria, prior to returning to the United States, where she received her Master's degree in psychology from the University of Utah. In addition to bringing the Olympic Games to Salt Lake City, she prioritized efforts in revitalizing the downtown area and secured funding to expend the city railway and highway systems. After leaving office, she served as a professor at Furman University and later was Senior Vice President for Prudential Utah Real Estate. She died from lung cancer, even though she was never a smoker.
