Nguyen Loi
Virginia Beach - Nguyen Huy Loi, a former resident of Virginia Beach, died in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Nov. 6, 2014. He was 83.
His ashes will be interred in a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, Va.
Mr. Nguyen was a colonel in the South Vietnamese Army and a military advisor to the South Vietnamese delegation at the Paris Peace Talks between 1968 and 1973. He immigrated to the United States after Saigon fell to the Viet Cong and settled in Virginia in 1975.
From 1977 to 1997, he and his wife, Vu Minh Tam, founded and operated La Caravelle, the French-Vietnamese restaurant on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach.
Mr. Nguyen, who was born in Hanoi on March 28, 1931, is survived by his wife, of Ho Chi Minh City, and four children: Jacky Nguyen Huy Linh of Germantown, Md.; Bobby Nguyen Huy Luan of Ho Chi Minh City; Micky Nguyen Huy Luyen of Virginia Beach; and Catherine Nguyen Thanh Tam of Maplewood, N.J. He is also survived by eight grandchildren.
