EAST STONE GAP, Va. - Wade Lee Tate, 93, passed away Monday (May 13, 2002) at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Big Stone Gap, Va.
He was a lifelong resident of East Stone Gap and was of the Methodist faith. He was an employee for many years of the former Gulf Oil Corp. of Big Stone Gap and also the former Southwest Oil Co. of Big Stone Gap.
He was the last surviving member of the East Stone Gap High School "Tigers" championship football team of 1926. He was also a lifelong avid fan of the University of Alabama football team.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Macy Giles Tate; and a son, Wade Edward Tate.
Surviving are his son, Roderick Tate and wife Janet, Big Stone Gap, Va.; daughter, Bobbie Jean Cooper and husband Kyle, Kingsport; four grandchildren, Roddy Tate and Christie McGuffin of Berea, Ky., Steven Cooper of Elizabethton, and Sharon Cooper of Kingsport; three great-grandchildren, Julia and Malachi Cooper, and Bailey McGuffin; brother, Bill Tate, Big Stone Gap, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Hugh Bowers and the Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating.
Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Riverview Cemetery in East Stone Gap.
Pallbearers will be Kyle Wentz Tate Jr., Johnny Bill Tate, Michael Tate, Roddy Tate, Steven Cooper, Scott McGuffin and J. Fred Tate.
Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at the cemetery.
