Ellen Mae Peterson passed away on April 30, 2014 at the Augustana Mercy Health Care Center in Moose Lake, Minnesota. She was 90 years old.
Ellen Welchlin was born on September 15, 1923, daughter to Edward and Zella (Viesselman) Welchlin at Rose Lake Farm in Fairmont, MN. Ellen was raised with two younger brothers on the family farm near Northrup, MN.
Ellen attended country school through 8th grade. She went on to graduate from Fairmont High School in 1942. From 1943 to 1945 Ellen worked as a bookkeeper at the Water and Light Commission in Fairmont. On June 20, 1945 she married Arlo Peterson while he was home on military leave. In January of 1946, Ellen moved to Colorado Springs, CO to work for Robinson Grain Co. She worked there until Arlo was honorably discharged from the Army. In 1948 the couple leased a farm by Northrup, MN. They lived in Northrup until they bought a farm east of Braham in 1951 where they farmed until retirement in 1985.
In Ellen's youth she was active in 4-H and music (accordion, trombone, piano and singing) as well as dancing. She shared her love of music with her five children. She was active in the church choir and provided music at least once a month for church. Ellen was a 4-H leader and a Cub Scout Den mother. She made sure her children got to band, piano, baton and accordion lessons. She was very active with Danewood Rush Point Hospital Guild. She helped out at the Braham Hospital. She also helped with Church Women's meetings, the Building Committee for the Covenant Church, and she was a Charter member of the Braham VFW Ladies Auxiliary #1731.
Ellen's favorite past times were bowling at the State and National levels, dancing, selling Mary Kay cosmetics (1970's to 2008), selling Nikon products, golfing, working for 13 years at the Rangers Stadium in Florida and making quilts for grandkids.
Ellen worked for 12 years at Dahlman Manufacturing in Braham. She went on to work for 12 years at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in data entry until she retired in 1985 and moved to Port Charlotte, FL.
