Shelton Coffey was the son of Reverend Reuben A. Coffey and Polly Dowell Coffey. When he was six years old his family moved by covered wagon from North Carolina to Indiana where his father preached at the Bethel Baptist Church in Owen County. Shelton married Dicy Sanders on October 23, 1845. They were the parents of Melvin (who died at the age of sixteen) and Rosa and Carrey Coffey. Shelton served with the 43rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry for several months toward the end of the Civil War. In 1875 Shelton, Dicy, Rosa and Carrey moved from Indiana to Arkansas where they lived for the remainder of their lives.
