Lewis Castner "Sandy" Brown, 90,died quietly Saturday, February 28, 2015 in Columbia, Tennessee.
He was predeceased by his parents Major General Lytle Brown and Louise Lewis Brown and by his siblings: Lytle Brown Jr., Pauline Lewis Folk, Eugene Lewis Brown, Neill Smith Brown, and Dr. James Trimble Brown II. Mr. Brown was previously married to the late Ruth Faw Pointer Brown.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Virginia Elizabeth "Betty" White Kuykendall Brown of Columbia; daughter, Ruth Pointer Brown Cherry (Charles William) of Nashville; sons by marriage,:Dr. Samuel James Kuykendall III (Lucy Scott) of Columbia, TN and Davis White Kuykendall (Valerie) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Dr. Samuel James Kuykendall IV (Jenny), Kansas City, MO, Dr. Lucy Kuykendall Rice (Lieutenant Commander Patrick), Destin, FL, Davis White Kuykendall Jr. (Lauren), Lafayette, IN, Shannon Elizabeth Kuykendall, and Katherine Grace Kuykendall, Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren, Finn Nema Kuykendall, Iselle Malou Kuykendall, and Emma Lucy Rice.

Sandy Brown was a handsome, kind Southern Gentleman with a warm sense of humor. He was born October 18, 1924 in Nashville, TN, and later moved to Washington, DC where General Brown was serving, by Presidential Appointment (Herbert C. Hoover), as Chief of the Army Corps of Engineers. His boyhood was spent in the Panama Canal Zone during the time his father was Commander of the Zone. Upon his father's retirement, the family returned to Tennessee and settled in Franklin. Mr. Brown attended Battleground Academy, graduating in 1941.

He immediately joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and trained as an aircraft instrumentation specialist. From 1943-1945, Mr. Brown served aboard the aircraft carrier ,USS Wasp, which fought in major campaigns in the Marianas, Iwo Jima, and the Phillipines. After his discharge, Mr. Brown enrolled in Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

After a successful career as a mechanical engineer with Monsanto's Chemstrand subsidiary in Decatur, Alabama, Geigy Engineering in Mobile, Alabama, and at Fluor Daniel Construction Company in Greenville, SC. Mr. Brown retired in 1987 to enjoy boating and fishing in Greenville, South Carolina. He later moved back to Tennessee where he lived until his death. Mr. Brown's maternal grandfather, Major Eugene Castner Lewis (Pauline Dunn), was Chairman of the Board of Directors, Louisville & Nashville Railroad, and oversaw the construction of Union Station and the Parthenon. On his father's side of the family, Mr. Brown's great-grandfather, Neill S. Brown, was Governor of Tennessee in 1847. Governor Brown's son, James Trimble "Trim" Brown (Jane Nichol) (Mr. Brown's paternal grandfather) was a 19-year old 1st Lieutenant when he rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest in the Battle of Murfreesboro before returning to Nashville to practice law.
