Old Settler Dead
Hugh Wood, of Twin Grove township, died of apoplexy , at the home of his son, John Wood, at Scammon, Kansas, where he had recently gone for a short visit, November 18, 1908, aged 78 years, three months, and 19 days. He had lived in Greenwood county more than a third of a century and was a highly respected citizen and a consistent Christian. Hugh Wood was born in Lawrence county, Ohio, July 30, 1830, but removed with his parents to Indiana when but a baby. Jan. 25, 1852, he was married to Delilah Jackson. To them were born six children, four of whom survive their father, John of Scammon; Robert of Waco, Texas, and William and James of Twin Groves. Mrs. Wood, the wife and mother, died about a year ago. Hugh Wood and wife came to Kansas and to Greenwood county in 1873, settling on a farm northeast of Severy. Mr. Wood was converted and united with the Baptist church in 1864, and was an ordained deacon, and he died in the faith. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. J. L. Durham, of Climax, were held from the home of James Wood, near Severy last Sunday, November 22, at 11 a.m. Mr. Durham took as the text for his sermon Revelations XIV-13. Interment was in Twin Grove Cemetery.
