The daughter of Eddie Lee and Vara Lee (Boykin) Compton, Jay Nell was born on June 12, 1917 in Delia, Texas. She attended school in Palaba, Texas and moved to Abilene from El Paso in 1963. Jay Nell had worked at the Dixie Pig Restaurant for 10 years and in other food service for many years. She had also sold Mary Kay Cosmetics for many years. Jay Nell married Vernon L. Rogers in Sweetwater in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1961. She later married Aubrey C. Carpenter in Abilene in 1964. He preceded her in death in 1991. Always cheerful and friendly, Jay Nell was devoted to her church, Southern Hills Church of Christ. She was very helpful to her neighbors and was a friend to many. And she loved hamburgers!
Besides her two husbands and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Chaney Lee Compton; a sister, Vollie Lorene White; and her daughter, Ruby Nell Rogers.
Survivors include her son, Eddie Rogers of Abilene; stepson, Lesley Carpenter of Abilene; stepdaughter, Carolyn Marsh of San Angelo; son-in-law, Bob Rogers of Phoenix, AZ; ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
