Florence Brooks was born in Richmond, Virginia on April 17, 1903. Her parents were Stonewall Jackson Brooks and Emma Frances Walker. She married William Denison Kelley on June 25, 1923. They had 5 children, Bill,Jr., Marcia, Donald and Patricia. Their fifth baby died at birth and was named Florence Virginia. They lived most of their years in Lewisburg, WV at Stonehedge on Washington Street or Route 60. Their property ran to this cemetery and her grave overlooks the property they once owned.

The thing I remember most about my grandmother Tarney is how wonderful she was with her grandchildren. She had a way of making children feel important and in demand. She let us help make fudge and get ready for holidays. I loved making cranberry bracelets for the Turkey on Thanksgiving.

She went to Mary Baldwin College and I remember her telling me about Daddy Bill coming from Washington & Lee to court her. Like Daddy Bill, she also loved flowers, but I remember her loving pansies and little tea roses the best.
