ATLANTA - Phillip Kent Dunn, 55, of Atlanta, passed away Friday, April 26, 2002, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 12 Noon in the Chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Macon Memorial Park.
He was born in Macon to Katherine Dunn and the late Basil E. Dunn, but had resided in Atlanta for most of his life and enjoyed his home in Highland, NC. Educated in Georgia, he was a graduate of Willingham High School in Macon and the University of Georgia. After graduating in 1969 from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts degree, he began his public service career as a caseworker with Bibb County Department of Family and Children Services. After working in the aid of families with dependent children program, he returned to the University of Georgia in 1979 to complete his Master's degree in Social Work.
In 1973, he returned to active public service with the Cobb County Department of Family and Children services. During his tenure in Cobb County, he rose from a caseworker to supervisor in Child Protection Services and was instrumental in opening the Cobb County Emergency Children's Shelter. From 1975 to 1984, he worked in the state offices of the Division of Family and Children Services as a Supervisor of Quality Control as Chief of the AFDC unit. Additionally, he supervised staff in the Medicaid/Nursing Home and Food Stamp programs. In 1984, he returned to county services as a Program Director for Fulton County Department of Family and Children Services. During his tenure in Fulton County, he was responsible for 425 staff providing service and financial assistance to needy families and the aid to families with the dependent children and food stamp programs. In 1988, he became the County Director for Morgan County Department of Family and Children Services. In 1994, he retuned to the state offices of the division of family and children services as a social service program consultant in the consultation and support unit. In this concluding capacity, he was responsible for assisting county staff with a myriad of social service issues. While working in a thirteen county area in North Georgia, he did consultation in child protective service cases, foster care and adoption.
He was highly regarded and respected by his peers and colleagues in the division of family and children services. He was a generous, kind and considerate individual always willing to give of his time, talent and skills. In his career, he positively touched the lives of Georgians of all ages. His commitment and service to needy families and abused and neglected children will be sorely missed.
