Kathryn E. Gray, Rapid City, was born January 19, 1917 to William P. Hennessey and Sadie Tanner Hennessey, she was proud of her Perkins County heritage.
She worked for her room and board with a family in Lemmon where she graduated from Lemmon High School. Her mother moved her family to Spearfish, where Kay met and was married to Glen E ‘Buddy’ Gray on December 8, 1935. They celebrated 38 years together before Bud’s death in 1993.
They began their family with the birth of their first daughter, Glenys in December 1938, their son Paul, in November 1942 and a second daughter Linda in May of 1944.
When Bud was working at Weaver Army Base, now Ellsworth, they lived on base for several years and in 1951 moved to Piedmont, where Kay continued to live until 2004.
Her love of friends and her particular love for what is now Grace United Methodist Church was her life and three generations there called her Grandma Kay.
She moved to Rapid City to be near her daughter, and in 2008 she moved to Golden Livingcenter Bella Vista and it was not long until she was known as Grandma Kay, and she received love and care beyond words.
She died, blessedly, with no lingering illness, no fears and no pain and the family is eternally grateful.
She is survived by her son Rock Springs, WY; her daughter Glenys and eleven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993 and her daughter Linda in 1974.
A life of 98 years is not measured in years or history. It is how much love was given and received. Kay was truly blessed, and was a true blessing.
