Mr. John Thomas Wynne, Sr.
November 20, 1922 - February 27, 2015

John Thomas Wynne, Sr., 92, of Sardis, Georgia, born November 20, 1922, to Dr. Judson Holmes and Mrs. Janie Rackley Wynne, Sr., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 27, 2014.

He was predeceased by his loving and faithful wife of 66 years, Martha Colvin Wynne.

Mr. Wynne graduated from S.G.A. High School, went on to graduate from The University of Georgia in 1943 and was a retired pharmacist and owner of Wynne’s Drug Store in Sardis. Mr. Wynne served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist’s Mate attached to the 2nd Marine Division. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa and served with the U.S. occupation forces in Japan. His ship was the first one to shore in Nagasaki immediately after the war where he helped establish a hospital in an old school building and was in charge of the division of Pharmacy.

Mr. Wynne had a long history of service to his community. He had a sincere dedication to his customers and sick patients seldom found today. Many times he would be called out in the middle of the night to fill prescriptions for patients or sick children. He did so with love and never begrudgingly.

He was charter president of both the Waynesboro Exchange Club and Sardis Lions Club. He was a member of the Burke County Board of Education for 17 ½ years and chairman for 8 of those.

Deeply involved in serving as a good citizen of Sardis, Wynne was elected city councilman for several terms. He was a volunteer fireman for 20 years, serving as chief for many of those years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 180 and Alexander Masonic Lodge No. 385 for 65 years. He also served as local chairman for many years for Heart and Cancer Fund Drives.

Family and The Sardis Baptist Church were also most important parts in the life of Mr. Wynne. He was ordained as a deacon there in 1962 and served as chairman. He served the church as trustee, Sunday School teacher and superintendent as well as leader of a boy’s group known as the Royal Ambassadors.

He is survived by his three sons, John T. Wynne, Jr., his wife, Tish, and their children Thomas and Andrew; Jut Wynne and his wife Cathy; and Bob Wynne, his wife Patty and their children Robert and Natalie; Also many beloved nieces and nephews.
