He was born on July 23, 1926 in Dugger, Indiana, to the late Bert and Nell (Curry) Pope.
Russell spent his entire childhood in Dugger, Indiana, where he attended school and graduated from Union High School with the class of 1944.
He was drafted during WWII at the age of 18 and served his country with valor as a Tec. 5 in the US Army from April 3, 1945 through December 29, 1946. After returning from the war, Russell returned to Dugger to work on the family farm.
On December 17, 1955 he married Shirley A. (Carlisle) Pope and they moved to Martinsville. Upon moving to Martinsville, he gained employment as a heavy equipment operator at Hydraulic Press Brick Company in Brooklyn for the following 32 years; retiring in 1987.
Shortly after retirement he realized that wasn’t for him and he began working at SCI REMC in Martinsville; retiring in 1996.
Russell loved the outdoors and took pleasure in simply setting under a big ole’ tree, cutting his grass or watching his grandchildren play games. Without a doubt, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
He leaves behind his loving family and dear friends including his wife, Shirley A. Pope of Martinsville; daughter, Beth (husband, Jon) Elkins of Martinsville and three grandchildren, Brittany (husband, Mitch) Gore, David & Ryan Elkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Cecil Pope and three sisters, Mary Monroe, Mildred Trinks and Catherine Arnold.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Saturday, February 28th from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center, Martinsville. Rev.
