Otto died from swelling of the brain after a farm accident involving a horse. While tending the stock on the Fitzlaff farm, one of the horses became excited and kicked Otto in the stomach. This caused him to fall backwards onto the foundation wall of the barn. Otto's head struck a stone with such force as to knock him senseless. The blow caused serious internal head trama and cranial bleeding. He was taken to a hospital in Mankato overnight. The following day an operation to relieve the pressure was preformed but it was too late to save his life.
Otto's extended family had moved to the East Coast. He was the only one to remain in the Midwest. His Father was Asmus Nicholas ASMUSSEN 1857 - 1954 and his Mother was Maria 'Mary' Dora RATHGEN 1860 - 1941.
