Elizabeth Somerfield Byrd passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of James L. Byrd, who preceded her in death. She was a devoted mother and Nana and is survived by her four children, Barbara Byrd Keenan (Terry), Kathleen Byrd Guinan (Frank), James W. Byrd (Carol) and John C. Byrd (Susan); her grandchildren, Mark J. Guinan (Lindsey), Kelly Guinan Fader (Bill), Paul Hagy (Michele) and Lori Baldwin; her great grandchildren, Lael, Lanae, Mary and Aniyah. She is also survived by her sisters, Jean Zimmerman and Leah Welk; and her brothers, Walter and Raymond Somerfield. Mrs. "Birdee" was loved by her colleagues and the children at Burkholder's Pre-School and Kindergarten, where she worked for many years following her nursing career at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia and Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, DE. She was a role model of dedication to family and friends.
Visitation will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Wilmington, DE 19808 on Sunday, March 1 from 4:00-6:00PM.
A celebration of life service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, March 2 at 9:30AM, followed by interment at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE at 11:00AM.
In lieu of flowers, to recognize Betty's passion, memorial contributions should be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
