George H. Brooks was a cook when the 1879 Oshkosh city directory was published. He married Elpha Adella Robbins at Oshkosh, on July 19, 1882. Elpha was the daughter of Alma (Guild) Robbins Brooks, and so was George’s step-sister. George and Elpha had five children: Grace, Alma, Harold, Fay, and Margaret, all of whom were born when the family lived in Wisconsin. Around 1897, the family – including George’s father, Enoch – moved to Minneapolis, where George ran a lumber business known as “G.H. Brooks & Co.” They lived for a couple years at 2526 Aldrich Ave. North, and then at 1834 4th Ave. South. George died suddenly on September 5, 1899, at the age of 42, leaving a widow and five kids. He was buried at Cumberland, Wisconsin, the home of his brother, Elmer. Elpha never remarried and spent the next half century with son Harold, daughter-in-law Marian, and grandchildren in Appleton and Green Bay, Wisconsin. She passed away around 1950, probably in Green Bay, where she last lived with Harold’s family.
