James Daniel Barton, Dallas business executive and longtime Duncanville restaurant owner passed away Dec. 17, 2002.

He was born May 11, 1920.

His parents, James Floyd and Ruby Daniel Barton, farmed in the Five Mile Community near Dallas.

After his fathers untimely death in a construction accident, his mother married Homer Ferguson, a farmer & contractor in Duncanville and the widowed father of four children.

J.D. attended Duncanville schools and graduated at the head of his class. After briefly attending SMU and Business College.

He joined the U.S. Army in the fall of 1941. He was sent to the China-Burma-India command, serving first as sergeant major for Gen. Joseph Stillwells headquarters. He was later assigned to the U.S. China training center in Ramghar, India, as supervisor of native Chinese interpreters. He achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, was given the rank of major in the Army of the Republic of China, and was awarded the bronze star.

After the war he attended SMU, married Winnie Stapp, and raised two sons.

Sears Roebuck & Co. promoted him to Southwest Regional Credit Manager.

He later worked as an executive for Lerners Inc., the Medical Bureau, Inc. and Baylor Medical Center.

After a divorce in 1962, J.D. was married to Virginia Stamps, a fellow executive at Sears.

They raised a daughter, Ruth Ann, and worked together at the restaurant, grocery store & shopping center they opened in Duncanville.

For many years the Barton House Restaurant served good food, good humor and good cheer to all who entered its doors.

Active members of the C-B-I Veterans Association, J.D. & Virginia served as hosts for many local, state & national meetings.

J.D. Barton is preceded in death by his wonderful wife Virginia.

He is survived by his daughter Ruth Ann; sons Dan & Burt; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters Billie Ross and Jo Powers, brother L.H. Ferguson, Jr. and friends without number.

The Barton Family wants to thank Dr. Mark Armstrong, Diane Long, Melanie Barnes, Mike Kemp & Don Pope for their compassion & friendship.

Funeral Services are 10:00 AM, Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at Jaynes Memorial Chapel in Duncanville.

Burial will follow at Little Bethel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
