Doris Jean (Lewis) Grunwald, 82, of St. Joseph, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013.
She was born in Omaha, Neb. on July 15, 1930 to Sidney and Lora (Detlef) Lewis.
Doris Jean lived most of her life in St. Joseph: graduated from Central High School, St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minnesota), and earned her Master’s Degree Northwest Missouri State University.
She retired after 31 years of teaching home economics, (and serving as the Department of Home Economics Chairman), mostly at Central High School. She enjoyed traveling, and was very creatively talented in cooking, sewing, and stained glass; among many other interests. Doris Jean was a former member of Missouri State Teacher’s Association, Junior League, and PEO Sisterhood.
Doris Jean was preceded in death by her parents; Sidney Mason Lewis and Lora Ann Detlef Lewis; her brother, David Warren Lewis; and husband of 41 years, Roger Grunwald; and survived by three daughters; Lori Hansen (Gregg Bowen), Gayle Grunwald, and Lynn Smith (Wayne); four grandchildren, Matthew Sidney Grunwald Beckman, Samantha Weber (Shane), Audrey and Caleb Wells, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 1, at Francis Street First United Methodist Church, St. Joseph.
Visitation at 2 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 3:30 p.m.
