A memorial service to celebrate the life of Phillip Eugene Gene Richardson, 89, of Lexington, formerly of Camden, will be held at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 1:00 PM. Rev. John Hallman will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in John Knox Hall. Memorials may be made in Mr. Richardsons memory to the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina, 700 Devage St, Lexington, SC 29073 Phillip Eugene Gene Richardson, husband of Clara Violet Koonts Richardson, died Sunday, March 3, 2013. He was born January 20, 1924 in Greensboro, NC, the son of the late Everett Charles and Elsie Mae Rockett Richardson. A 1948 graduate of NC University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, he worked for Dupont for 30 years until retirement. He was in WWII veteran where he served as a medic with the 114th infantry within the 44th division of the 7th Army. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his action to mend wounds and keep his fellow soldiers alive after following the path of the D-Day soldiers through France to Germany and spent 11 months in Europe. Gene was a former member and past president of Camden Chamber of Commerce, former member and past president of Camden Sertoma Club, and retired member of Camden Jaycees. He was a present member of Kershaw County Seniors Club. He had 43 years of continuous membership with the American Legion and was past Commander of Post 17, former member of Posts 17 and 15, was a present life member of Post 95, and a life member of the VFW. Gene was a member of Vorture 1444, 40 and 8. In 2012, he flew on an Honor Flight to see the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. He was active in recruiting High School student to attend Boys State. Gene spent over 35 years working with Credit Unions, all but 3 years were as an unpaid volunteer. He was past Chairman of SAFE Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for 21 years. Gene served on the May Plant Credit Union Board for 3 years and as the paid manager for 3 years. He presently had served as a Volunteer at Dorn VA Hospital and had also presently served as a member of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center Ambassadors Club. Mr. Richardson is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 64 years, Clara K. Richardson. Gene is survived by his daughters, Nancy R. Medlin (John) of Greensboro, NC, Pat R. Oakfield (Brian) of Matthews, NC, Phyllis R. Price (Fred ) of Columbia, SC; son, Phillip E. Richardson, Jr. of Ridgeland; grandchildren, John Medlin, Jr, Andrew and Christopher Medlin, all of Greensboro, NC, Fred Lewis Trey Price, III, of Columbia, SC and Emmett Johnston Richardson of Spartanburg, SC; granddaughters, Sara Cockfield Hall (Ryan) of Charlotte, NC and Amy Cockfield McKinney (Nate) of High Point, NC, Erin Cockfield Grall (Ross) of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Lauren Price Gillespie (Will), of Columbia, SC, Annie Holladay Richardson of Ridgeland, SC; and five great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Lou Gentry of Greensboro, NC. Besides his parents, Gene was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Ann Jones and daughter-in-law, Holladay Holly Johnston Richardson.
