R obert Kenneth "Mick" McGuire, 96, passed from this life on Monday, December 21st due to age related illness. His sons, daughters and a son-in-law were fortunate to spend time with him while he rested at Urbandale Care Center.

Robert was born in Decatur County, Iowa to Robert A. and Mary E. (Bronson) McGuire on May 27, 1924. He grew up on a farm near Osceola, Iowa in the Liberty Township. Robert attended country schools in Decatur and Clarke County and was an Osceola High School graduate. He attended Coyne Trade School in Chicago, Illinois to become an electrician.

Robert and Junia Rose Davenport were married on July 13, 1946. He and Junia had four children. They are Robert McGuire, Clearwater, Florida; Rosemary Eden (Stephen), Clive, Iowa; Janet Webb (David), Clearwater, Florida and Jim McGuire, Bokeelia, Florida. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Carry Eden Zaras (Paul), Joshua Eden, Shannon McQuary (Amy), Bobby McGuire, John McGuire, Jordan Hall, Maggie Hall, Mathew Hall and Cory McGuire. Great grandchildren include Max Eden (Amanda), Madeline Eden, Carter Eden, Henry Eden, Christopher Zaras, Mary Zaras and Jack McQuary and great great granddaughter Lynn Kennedy Eden. His children and grandchildren were the center of his world. He was an active parent in his children's activities throughout their school years particularly sports.

Robert joined the US Army on April 16, 1943, during the height of WWII. He helped liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. Robert served his country as a combat engineer with the 254th Engineer Combat Battalion that was attached to the 1st Army during the D-Day invasion of France on June 6, 1944. As a soldier during the invasion, Robert participated in the amphibious landing where the 254th cleared mines and booby traps, repaired damaged roads and built bridges. They laid the foundation for the Allied advance into Nazi occupied Europe. Robert also saw combat action in the Ardennes-Alsace offensive also known as the Battle of the Bulge. The 254th eventually became attached to the Third Army under General George Patton. For his gallantry during these battles, Robert was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation with Streamer Embroidered "Belgium" and the French Croix De Guerre with Silver Streamer Embroidered "Belgium" and many War related decorations. The 254th was instrumental in clearing the way for the Allied advance into Germany by building pontoon bridges across the Rhine. Robert was part of the task force that liberated Buchenwald, a Nazi concentration camp located on German soil. Robert continued his service to his fellow soldiers by participating in many military funerals through the years. He was an active member of the VFW in both Osceola and Centerville and enjoyed yearly reunions of the 254th Engineer Battalion.

Robert worked for The Osceola Phone Company, Clarke Electric and Iowa Southern Utilities in Osceola. In 1968 he transferred to Centerville with ISU, where he retired in 1989. After retirement he built his own home, enjoyed traveling and attending live music at The Country Theater and White Oak Grill.

Preceding Robert in death were his parents, his wife, Junia and his second wife, Ann.
