Maxine Jewel Norman

Maxine Jewel Norman, born January 19th, 1923, Mammoth, West Virginia, and passed away December 20, 2008, in League City Texas, at the age of 85. Maxine was one of six children of Ray and Lalla Barnett. After growing up in the Springdale area of Fayette County, West Virginia, she met the love of her life, Clinton “CC” Norman, at a square dance in Bellwood and was married in July of 1943. After CC’s service to his country during WWII, they moved from their beloved West Virginia to La Marque, Texas, where the Norman family business began with the opening of the Amoco Station on Cedar Street in La Marque.

The family business grew into multiple service station locations throughout Galveston County. CC and Maxine then moved to League City in 1960, opening the Amoco station at Hwy 3 and Galveston Street. The Norman name became known for automotive repair, emergency wrecker service, and U-Haul rentals serving the growing League City - Clear Lake area. Maxine played a larger than life role in the business, working beside her husband as the business bookkeeper and U-Haul Manager. The Norman family would greet new NASA families moving into the area and see them off, as they would be transferred when the space Program continued to change.

After the death of “CC’ in 1985, Maxine continued her role in the business until her retirement in 1999, when the business was sold after thirty-nine years of service to the community. Maxine was well known for her passion for Bingo and spending time with her friends. She always enjoyed a good sing along, a good laugh, and just being your friend. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

She is preceded in death by her husband Clinton “CC” Norman, and her first son Ronnie; parents Ray and Lalla Barnett; sister Wanda; and brothers Elben and Russell Barnett.

Her survivors are brothers Leroy and wife Clista Barnett, Bob and wife Dumpy Barnett; sisters in law Kate Barnett, Jo Norman, and Joe Ann Norman; son Curtis Norman and wife Diane; grandsons Kenneth and Clinton Norman; granddaughters Tammy and Jennifer Norman; one great-grandchild Tre’ Perdue’; loving sisters in law, many nieces and nephews, lifelong friends and business associates.

Maxine’s family invites you to join them in celebration of her life at 1 p.m. Friday, December 26, 2008, with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. at Crowder Funeral Home Chapel in Dickinson, Texas.

Interment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.
