Nan L. Harrington
Aug. 13, 1956 - Feb. 16, 2015
Resident of Belmont

Natalie (Nan) Lynn Harrington (nee Miller), 58, passed away on February 16, 2015 in her home in Ashland, Oregon, after a 7.5 year battle with GIST cancer.

Born in Sacramento on August 13, 1956, Nan was a graduate of Luther Burbank High School (Class of 1974), daughter of the late Vern and Dorothy Miller, and oldest sister to Valerie Alens (Folsom) and Stephanie Kirby (Sacramento). She married James (Jim) Allen Harrington at First Baptist Church in Sacramento on May 28, 1977, settling in Belmont, in the San Francisco Bay Area, where they raised their daughters Megan Leigh Canning (born 1984), and Caitlin Harrington Brown (born 1985).

During Nan's time in Belmont from 1983-2005, her life was characterized by a love of family life and a dedication to active community service. A volunteer in the Belmont school system from 1989-2005, Nan served Fox Elementary, Ralston Middle, and Carlmont High School in the classroom, PTA, music and drama projects, fundraising ventures, tutoring, parent support and outreach, and as Carlmont's Senior School Secretary to the Principal. She also served her church community, Girl Scouts of America, and supported her children's activities in the Scottish pipe band scene. Her contributions earned her myriad service awards including an Outstanding Volunteer award from Girl Scouts of America, two Golden Oak Awards (1999, 2003) for outstanding service to the PTA, Carlmont High School Volunteer of the Year (2000), and Sequoia High School District Volunteer of the Year (2000).

Nan's drive to serve others was defined not by a need for recognition, but by her immense love for her family, friends and community. She was selfless in the truest sense of the word- gentle, kind, self-sacrificing, unassuming, compassionate, and patient- and dedicated her life to bettering the lives of others. She believed in the transformative potential of education, music, community, and faith, and she was led by her heart in every decision she made. Nan was a gift to all those around her, who were able to bask in the warmth of her love, as she always made time for everyone who needed her. A friend once said of her, "To know Nan is to love Nan"; and no statement could be closer to the truth.

In the last years of her life, Nan began a new venture in Glencoe, Illinois (2005-2008), and later Ashland, Oregon (2009-2015). Although she developed GIST in 2007, she handled her illness with grace, positivity and selflessness. She passed away in the comfort of her home with her family by her bedside, in the knowledge that she was very, very loved.

Nan's memorial service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church in Burlingame, California. Her ashes will be placed at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, California.
