One of Hazleton's oldest residents is Mrs. Elizabeth Knies of 551 North Church street, who was 93 years old on May 8. She lives alone, does her own housework and is fond of reading. Born at Laurel Hill on May 8, 1848, she remembers the Civil War days and when Hazleton was just a village. Her first husband, George Krick, died 62 years ago and her second husband, William Knies, 27 years ago. She has three children: George Krick and Mrs. Dora Pipperty of this city and Mrs. Anna Deeble of Delano.

Mrs. Elizabeth Knies, aged 94 years, died at her home 551 North Church street at an early hour Sunday morning. She would have attained her 95th birthday on May 8th next. Death resulted from complications of several months, due to her longevity. The remains may be viewed at the Salem Evangelical church, Wet Broad street, after 12 o'clock noon on Tuesday. Funeral services will follow at 2 pm at that edifice with Rev. William F. Savidge officiating and burial will be made in Vine street cemetery.
Mrs. Knies was the oldest member of Salem Evangelical church, having joined that congregation 80 years ago. She was very active in church affairs for many years. Prior to the death of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Pippert who resided next door, she spent much time there. A keen reader, and possessing a remarkable memory, she could recite many incidents that occurred here when Hazleton was a village, and she lived to see it become a borough and later a thriving city. Her recollection of the young men leaving Hazleton to engage in the Civil War was very vivid.
Born at Laurel Hill, May 8th, 1848, Mrs. Knies was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Schutter and is listed as one of the real pioneer residents of this community. Her two brothers, the late Alderman Charles Schutter and John Schutter, insurance agent, were prominent in the early business life of Hazleton. Her first husband, George Krick, died 63 years ago and her second husband, William Knies, 28 years ago. Surviving her are two children, George Krick, and Mrs. Anna McKinley. A number of grandchildren also survive. Five children preceded her in death.
