John Phillip, son of Henry John Workman, was born in Hesse Darnestadt, Germany in 1836. He immigrated to the United States with his brother, Jacob. He first resided in Pennsylvania, then moved to Sciota, Illinois where he met and married Margaret Allshouse in 1861. His brother Jacob served in the Union Army in the 53rd Illinois Infantry Regiment, dying of wounds recieved in the Battle of Decatur, Alabama in August of 1864. It is not known if John served though he is listed in an 1862 Federal military Census for Illinois. He eventually moved his family to Andrew County, Missouri. He and his wife had eleven children. He died in 1881 and is buried with his wife in the Empire Prairie Cemetery.
