Born in Bismarck (Quentin) on August 23, 1910, he was the son of the late Ira and Annie Sweigart Smith.
He and his brother, Ted, owned and operated Smith’s Texaco on S. Ninth St. in Lebanon until the business closed in the 1970’s. For many years he and his wife owned and operated the former Smith’s Grocery Store on Route 72 near Bunkerhill. Rodger was a former member of the Blue Ridge Rod & Gun Club in Lycoming County where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking and playing cards. He was fond of taking family car trips throughout the New England and western states and Canada. He was an avid reader of western and civil war history and loved to discuss current events and politics. Prior to entering Spang Crest, he was often seen having a cigar on the front porch swing of his residence at 2066 Route 72 North.
He is survived by his sons Carl J. husband of Loretta Smith of York and Ted W. husband of Kay Smith of Fredericksburg; daughters Bettie J. wife of Mike Batdorf of Lebanon, Shirley A. wife of James Sheriff of Annville and Susan L. wife of Chuck Stoever of Lebanon; 19 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son and daughter-in-law George and Grace Hinkle; grandson Joey Hinkle; brother Ted Smith and sisters Violet Miller, Erma Shirk and Martha Weiland.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015, at 11 AM at the Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home & Crematory, Rt. 72 & Camp Meeting Rd., Jonestown. A viewing will be held on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home and prior to the service on Friday. Interment will follow at the Covenant/Greenwood Cemetery, Ebenezer.
