"TRAGEDY OCCURS SATURDAY NIGHT NORTH OF CITY: John Morgan DAVIDSON, Jr., Fatally Shoots His Parent Following Trouble in Home Near Here. // NO CHARGE IS MADE AGAINST THE YOUTH: Aged Man is Said to Have Shot at Son Few Minutes After An Attack on His Wife. // John Morgan DAVIDSON, 63, after an alleged attack upon Mrs. DAVIDSON, was earl last night shot to death by his nineteen-year-old son, John Morgan DAVIDSON, Jr., at their farm, nine miles north of Columbus, near the Fortson road. // Late last night no charges had been preferred against the youthful slayer by county police who investigated. Authorities were inclined to believe the boy justified in the deed. // The father was said to have first fired one time at his son with a pistol. Then the youth retaliated with a shotgun, the charge entering the chest of his father. Death was almost instantaneous. // Mother and son told authorities, they said, of a life filled with unhappiness, caused by the frequent drunken orgies of a husband and father. // A little group of neighbors stood shivering around a bonfire during the late chilling hours last night, discussing the tragedy. One said there were bullet holes in the home, put [?] there by the elder DAVDISONT on other occasions. / Drinking Charged // Said to have been drinking heavily during the afternoon yesterday, the widely known farmer brought matters to a climax when he was alleged to have attacked Mrs. DAVDISON and caused others of the family to flee from the house by his wrath. // Chief of County Police J. M. HULING said he was told that DAVIDSON commanded his son to go get him whiskey and when the youth refused, his father left the place with the avowed determination to obtain the drink. // The family, terrorized, was said to have been in hiding when the farmer returned shortly and fired on his son. // The boy then seized a shotgun and fired. His father, a short distance away, fell forward, fatally wounded. The mother and son were almost prostrated by the tragedy a short while after the occurrence. // Chief HULING, Officers W. G. HENDRICKS, M. D. HADLEY and E. C. SMITH were in the vicinity at the time of the killing. They were notified and hurried to the scene. The body of the slain man was found by them and near it was the pistol. // Self Defense Claimed // Mrs. DAVIDSON and the youth were questioned by the authorities and from information gathered, Chief HULING expressed the belief the shooting was in self defense. He did not arrest the boy, he said, because of the statements made by those near at the time of the killing. // The slain man was said to have [continued page 4:] started drinking early yesterday afternoon and became disorderly. // The deceased is survived by his wife, two daughters: Miss Elise DAVIDSON and Mrs. C. O. MILES, and three sons, John Morgan DAVIDSON, Jr., Louis DAVIDSON and Rerhette DAVIDSON. // Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. WAITE of the Midland district will officiate and interment will be in the family burying grounds. // A resident on the 'Old DAVDISON place' all his life, the deceased was widely known. He was the son of the late Squire Larkin DAVIDSON. // Thirty years the deceased had lived with his family in the typical old farmhouse, located in the midst of water oaks and elms trees."
