NAME:
Many of his military records list his name as James G. Nichols; some say James E.; some show James G. being crossed off and changed to James E. All records refer to the same Private in the 3rd Cavalry. There was only one James Nichols in the unit.

THIS MAY BE A CENOTAPH.
James Gilbert Nichols with the same dates and born in Berkley, MA, has a gravestone in Cemetery on the Green, Middleboro, MA with his wife, Lucia, who died after him. Perhaps, he was initially interred at Nemasket and later moved to be beside his wife or he's still at Nemasket and the other is a cenotaph. Or when the local veteran's group in Dec. 1928 ordered a military stone for him, they didn't know he was buried in Cemetery on the Green with his wife. Click here- Other Stone

Sadly, the military supplied stone has the wrong middle initial.

Son of Gilbert & Rebecah Nichols.
Civil war veteran.
Enlisted Dec. 9, 1861 Lowell, MA into Co. A of 2nd Regiment Cavalry. That unit later was re-organized as Captain S. Tyler Read's 3rd Regiment Cavalry. An application for a disability discharge dated June 15, 1862 states a general weakness. It says his age should have prevented his enlistment. Discharged at New Orleans, LA on July 11, 1862.
