John L. Spires, 99, of Lebanon, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2006 in Lebanon.

He was born on January 26, 1907 in Goldendale, Washington, the son of Fred W. and Emma (Robinson) Spires.

He moved to Lebanon when he was 3 years old and has lived here since. John attended Lebanon schools. He worked in paper production at Crown Zellerbach in Lebanon for 38 years. He retired in 1965 as an assistant foreman. John had also served in the National Guard. He married Thelma Nichols on April 18, 1942 in Corvallis.

He loved being outdoors and enjoyed farming as a hobby, he also loved animals. John enjoyed gardening and had planted a garden as recently as last year. He loved all people.

John was a member of the Lebanon First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife: Thelma Spires of Lebanon; 2 sons: Larry Spires and his wife Nikki of Lebanon and Dean Spires and his wife Marletta of Gold Hill; 2 daughters: Karen Griswold and her husband Bruce of West Linn and Pat Mc Keen and her husband Frank of Talent; 2 step-sons: Alvin Nichols and his wife Patsy of Brooks and Clyde Nichols of Tucson, Arizona; 11 grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Shirley Calahan; a step-son: Lee Nichols; a step-granddaughter: Mary Nichols; 4 brothers: Curtis, Bob, Wallace, and Bill Spires; and 3 sisters: Bernice Elkins, Elizabeth Gatchell, and Leora Huber.
