J. B. and Mattie farmed in Tishomingo Co. Mississippi until 1887-88, then moved to Sexton, Sabine Co., Texas. J. B. was a horse doctor while at Patroon, six miles from Sexton. During 1890 - 1910 the family moved in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas trying to escape the boll weevils. In 1900 Federal Census, they are located in Sevier Co. Arkansas.

J. B.'s parents were Jacob Odom, born April 10, 1815 in North Carolina, and Nancy Jane Woodley Odom, born in Tennessee May 8, 1820.
