Anna Theresa Joyce, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 13, 2015 in The Dalles, Oregon--2 days after celebrating her birthday with family.
Anna was born on the John Conroy Ranch, outside of Grass Valley, Oregon on February 11, 1922. Her parents, John Joyce and Julia Hehir Joyce were born in Ireland, immigrating in 1910 and 1915. She was the third child in her family which consisted of one brother (Toby) and four sisters (May, Kathleen, Margie and Barbara). They were lovingly known as the “Joyce Girls”. Around 1925 the family moved from Grass Valley to the Bakeoven area near Maupin and Anna attended Fleming Grade School. In 1934 the family moved to Pine Grove, and she attended Pine Grove Grade School. After grade school, Anna went to Wapinitia High School for 2 years and graduated from Maupin High School in 1939. She moved to Portland in 1940 and went to work for Bethlehem Steel Corporation as an Executive Secretary in 1941 until their steel mills on the West Coast closed in 1982. Anna retired at this time. Anna’s parents moved to Portland in 1963, Anna lived and cared for them until their deaths. After her retirement Anna spent time with her longtime friend, Harry Sharp. They both shared a love of dogs. Following Harry’s death, Anna moved to the Sherman County Senior Center, Moro, in 2006. She moved to The Springs at Mill Creek Assisted Living in The Dalles shortly after. Residing there, Anna lived her last years being adored and well cared for by the wonderful staff of The Springs at Mill Creek Assisted Living.
Anna was a member of the Jantzen Basketball team in the Women’s League of the Portland Park Bureau with her sisters. She also participated in a bowling league, golfed, loved fishing, skied, played in pool tournaments, rode horses moving cows or checking fences and was also found playing baseball and basketball with her nephews. Anna was devoted to caring and sharing with her Sisters’ families. Anna always remembered her nieces’ and nephews’ birthdays and never missed a family gathering, whether birthday, baptism, graduation, or wedding. Anna was always found Memorial Day weekend with a trunk full of flowers, delivering them to the cemeteries.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents, John and Julia Joyce, brother, Tobias Joyce, sisters May Joyce Maurer, Kathleen Joyce Pilling, Margie Joyce Bird and Barbara Joyce Sharp, Brother-in-laws, William Pilling, Patrick Sharp, Mark Bird, Donald Maurer and nephew Mark Joseph Bird.
