Frances V. (Fran) Sherman, age 94

Daughter of
The late Lillian E. Schwartz and Finley S. Jones.

Wife of
The late E. Richard (Dick) Sherman.

She grew up during the Great Depression helping her family in their dairy. She was taught by her parents, how to garden, cook, can and freeze food to counter the hardships of life at that time.

She was a 1938 graduate of Willis High School.
During high school she was a member of the 1932 Delaware (OH) Jr. High Championship band that played at the World’s Fair: A Century of Progress, in Chicago, 1933. Their outstanding clarinet quartet earned many awards.

Marriage
On October 20, 1940, Fran married her high school sweetheart and fellow band member, E. Richard (Dick) Sherman, in the orchard behind his parents’home in Stratford, Ohio.

During World War II, Fran was Dick's "job-holder” at the People’s Store while he was in the service. She did get time off to visit Dick at bases in Arizona and Colorado Springs, Colorado making the trip alone by train. After the war, she helped at their own store, Sherman’s Men and Boys’ Wear.

A life-long member of the Republican Party, she worked at polling places for many years, and was active in school activities, especially the Hayes High School Band Boosters.

She authored a published short story “Three Little White Clouds” and a poem “Those Other Beaus”, and owned Ceramics by Fran for many years where she taught classes in the one-room schoolhouse purchased adjacent to the family home.

She served as president of the Delaware Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Old Magnetic Springs Hospital Auxiliary and the Spartanburg Women’s Club, as well as being a board member, president, and honored volunteer of the Jane M. Case Hospital Auxiliary.

As the Ohio State Chapeau (president) of the American Legion related “8/40 salon des femmes”, Fran visited St Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado to present a check from the organization for research on respiratory diseases in children.

Dick and Fran retired to Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1979 to enjoy traveling with special trips to Europe, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, and New England in the fall. They kept active working on veterans’ issues and exploring Civil War Battlefields, like the National Battlefield at Cowpens. They combined their two passions by working on the annual "Mighty Moo” festival honoring veterans of the USS Cowpens, a WW II aircraft carrier. Throughout their lives they felt giving put them in contact with many fine people they called friends.

**Five children, John and Roberta (Robby) Sherman Silk of Cincinnati, Jeffrey and Deborah Benjamin Sherman of Granville, Gregg and Nancy Oberfield Sherman of Plain City, Scott and Donna Rhodes Sherman of North Augusta, GA and Betsy Sherman of Worthington, **thirteen grandchildren, Dr. Kirk and Veronica Silk Ziegler of Gainesville, FL, Dr. Jon, Jr. and Stephanie Baker Silk of Troy, Drs. Jason and Jennifer Gerlach Sherman of Scottsdale, AZ, Marissa Sherman of Cleveland, Ben Sherman, Kyle and Elizabeth Tucker Sherman, Eric and Jessica Forgy Sherman all of Columbus, Joel and Amy VanVlerah Sherman of Naperville, IL, Jarrod Sherman, Daniel and Audra Sherman Foertmeyer and Adam Sherman, all of Delaware, Megan Sherman and Scott Sherman, Jr. both of Augusta, GA, **ten great grandchildren and **a host of extended family and friends.
