Marine Lance Cpl. James was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. James died while conducting combat operations against enemy forces. He was guarding an area when he was shot in an exchange of gunfire with insurgents near Ramadi and died after being transferred to a nearby medical facility. Richard was the grandson of two veterans and had always wanted to join the military. He signed up for the Marines the day after he turned 18, while he was still in high school. The last time he talked to his family was when he called them to tell them about an upcoming television report about the situation in Ramadi.
