The 1900 Census shows Harl Carter (age 9, born in Indiana in Feb. 1890) living in Harrison Township, Boone County, Indiana with parents James W. and Mary A. He married Minnie E. Hiland on Jan. 26, 1909 in Hendricks County, Indiana. The 1910 Census shows Harl (age 20) and Minnie Carter living in Center Township in Boone County with daughter Burnie L (age six months). The 1920 Census shows Harl (age 29) living in Lebanon, Indiana with wife Minnie E. and children Berniece E. (age 10), Harriet G. (age 7), Mary M. (age 5) and Minnie L. (age 3). The 1930 Census shows Horrell Carter (age 40) living in Wayne Township, Marion County, Indiana with wife Minnie and children Geraldine (age 17) and Leon (age 13) and also grandson Herman Webb (age 2).
