Mary Ann Cochran married William Mason in Red Level, AL before the outbreak of the Civil War, she never dreamed she would be widowed by the war and left with two little boys, John Davis and Joseph Allen Mason. Some years later she met and married James N. Lyles. The first of their 8 children were born in Alabama. They moved to Texas in the early 1870's. Savannah Jane was born near Retreat, in Grimes County, TX where they had settled. Their other children were Walter, Andrew, Maggie (McGee), Hattie (Fleming), Cora and James.
