CIVIL WAR SERVICE:

Tilghman mustered in to Civil War service as a Private with Company K, 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on 26 August 1862. He mustered out by General order on 1 June 1865.

Major Engagements of the 47th Pennsylvania During His Term of Civil War Service: Defense of Florida and southern areas (1862); Battle of Pocotaligo, South Carolina (October 1862); defense of Florida via garrisoning at Forts Taylor and Jefferson (1863); Union General Nathaniel Banks' Red River Campaign across Louisiana (part of the only Pennsylvania regiment so engaged from March to May 1864, including the Battles of Sabine Cross Roads and Pleasant Hill in April 1864); legendary Union General Philip Sheridan's tide-turning 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, including the Battles of Opequan and Fisher's Hill (September 1864) and the Battle of Cedar Creek (19 October 1864).

His daughter, Sarah, preceded him in death, succumbing to stomach cancer in Allentown on 14 May 1906.

By the time of the 1910 federal census, Tilghman was living with his 24-year-old daughter (shown as Amelia) and by 1920, he was living in Allentown as a roomer with Lewis Scheirer and his family.
