“Billy,” as he was affectionately called, was educated at St. Martin de Porres Catholic School in Columbia, and St. Emma Military Academy in Powhatan, Virginia. He attended the University of South Carolina and later joined the United States Army and served his country honorably and proudly.
Willie was a confirmed Catholic. He attended St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.
Willie had a strong worth ethic. As a young entrepreneur he sold Jet magazines to neighbors and friends. He worked with his grandfather, Mr. Frank Scott, to maintain Mr. Scott’s various rental properties. He also worked at Olympia Mills.
Willie was employed as a railroad engineer with Norfolk Southern railroad for 21 years prior to his retirement due to declining health. An avid reader and history buff, Willie also enjoyed swimming, fishing and horseback riding. He supported many humanitarian causes, and showed a great compassion for mankind through his sharing and benevolence.
Willie enjoyed playing the piano, and as an adult studied piano under a concert pianist.
Willie leaves to mourn his passing his loving and devoted wife of 36 years, Mrs. Sylvia Peeples Harris, whom he affectionately called "Shugg," a loving daughter, Raquel Anita (Elbert) Ruff; two loving sons, Franklin Edward (Kimmy) Scott Harris and William James Harvey Harris, all of Columbia, a nephew reared in Willie’s home as his son, Broderick C. Adams, Atlanta, GA; a cousin reared in his childhood home as his brother, Romeo Watkins; grandchildren, Larry, Nicholas and Nicole Ruff, Franklin Jr., Kyeem, Brianna, Niqueria and Tiyanna Harris; sisters-in-law, Kathy P. (Leon) Adams and Ogretta Peeples; brother-in-law, Ben Peeples; a niece, Keisha Adams, two nephews, Lloyd Adams and J'Michael Peeples, and a host of loving relatives and friends who will remiss him dearly.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. Willie and Mrs. Franklin Scott Harris.
