Janet May Rothschild, aged 96, died on October 22, 2007 in Newbury Park, CA. Janet, who was born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 8, 1911, was the daughter of Arthur Jacob Widmer (1883-1947) and Lavina Roberts Widmer (1882-1974). Arthur and Lavina were married in Richmond, New York on Nov. 20, 1906, and the family moved to Missouri in 1907

Arthur was an architect and mechanical engineer, who graduated from Cornell University. In 1917, Arthur founded his own engineering company, Widmer Engineering Company, St. Louis. Arthur’s company designed and developed numerous major building projects in the St. Louis area.

Janet’s six siblings were Margaret Helen Widmer (1908-2003), Alice Lavina WIdmer (1909-1998), Mary Elizabeth Hochreiter (1912-1995), Ruth Roberts Widmer (1915-1921), Harriet Lindsey Kellaway Wieners ( 1920-1976) and Arthur Jacob Widmer Jr (1921-2014).

Janet graduated from Maryville College, Convent of the Sacred Heart, of St. Louis University. In 1943, she was associated with C.E. Hooper, Inc. and lived in New. York. In 1945. She lived in Chicago ran the office of Hooper Radio Advertising and later opened a radio advertising office in Los Angeles.

On August 9, 1948, Bill Rothschild married Janet May Widmer in the chapel of the Transfiguration —Little Church Around the Corner in New York City at 5:00 p.m. The Rev. Charles A. Weatherby performed the ceremony. Harriet Kellaway, Janet’s sister, was her attendant. John W. Hundley, Bill’s brother-in-law, was his best man.
After their honeymoon, Janet and Bill resided at Bill’s ranch in Thousand Oaks, CA.

According to the Lompoc Record, “Bill was associated with Paramount Studios from 1927-1936 as an editor, writer director and producer.” In 1942, he purchased a ranch in Thousand Oaks, CA and became a rancher for the next 18 years.

Frederick Arthur Rothschild, the couples only child, was born in 1950.

In the late 1950s, land developers bought several large ranches in Thousand Oaks. In 1959, Bill and Janet sold 111 acres to a developer for about $260,000. The development was known as the Meadows and included 240 homes on the Rothschild’s former property, plus another 1200 homes built on 550 acres that actor Joel McRae sold the developers. As a result of the continued construction by developers in the 1960s, the city’s population exploded from 2,934 in 1960 to 35,873 in 1970.

Janet and Bill Rothschild were very generous philanthropists, who donated land for local community and church projects. They also created awards to benefit financially needy students and community volunteers.

Janet and Bill, who were Episcopalians, donated land for the St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Thousand Oaks. They were also involved in the founding and growth of California Lutheran College, Thousand Oaks, which became California Lutheran University in 1986.

In 1966, Bill and Janet licensed several acres of their property to the Conejo Recreation and Park District for the creation of Old Meadows Park. In 1979, the Rothschilds officially donated a 6.2 acre parcel to the park district. The park also includes the Rothschild’s original reconstructed barn.

After Bill’s death, Janet and Cal Lutheran College representatives created the Wilfred A. Rothschild Memorial Scholarship, which is given annually to a financially needy student.

For many years, Janet Rothschild continued her involvement in numerous community projects in the Thousand Oaks area. In addition to keeping Bill’s memory alive through the Thousand Oaks Rotary Club’s Wilfred A. Rothschild Youth Leadership award and Cal Lutheran’s Wilfred A. Rothschild Memorial Scholarship, she was very involved with her church and the Mad Attic Store in Thousand Oaks.

At the time of her death, Janet was survived by her son, Ricky, three grandchildren and her brother, Arthur Widmer Jr. of Webster Groves, Missouri, who died in 2014.

Janet is interred next to Bill at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park, Westlake Village, CA.
