Mrs. J. C. Hanes, Dallas county pioneer, oldest daughter of Henry and Charlotte Cassatt, was born at Leabonon in Warren County, Ohio, November 2, 1849 and departed this life at the home of her son George in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Sunday, February 16, 1930, aged 80 years, 3 months, and 14 days.

In 1855 in company with her parents and a group of friends the family migrated west. Their conveyance was a team of horses and two yoke of oxen. In November of the same year they arrived in Boone township upon the farm now occupied by Miss Georgia Cassatt. She received her education at school No. 4, in Boone township.

On Sept. 26, 1878 she was united in marriage with J.C. Hanes and set up housekeeping on the farm east of Waukee now occupied by the Austin Dolmege family. To this union were born two sons, Henry David, and George Garfield who are both living.

In 1888 the family moved to Adel where they resided until the spring of 1890 when they left for Colorado Springs, Colorado. They remained there for two years returning again to Adel. In the spring of 1892 they moved to the Dowler farm south of Waukee, where they remained until 1908. At that time they came to Waukee, later removing to Des Moines.

Mr. and Mrs. Hanes have been spending this winter with their son, George Hanes of Colorado Springs, where Mrs. Hanes' death occurred.

Mrs. Hanes at the time of her death was a member of the Women's Relief Corps at Crocker Post Des Moines and member of Maple Grove church where she faithfully attended services for many years.

She leaves to mourn their loss, her husband, J.C.Hanes, two sons, Henry David of Des Moines; and George Garfield, of Colorado Springs, 4 grandchildren, Lester of Pueblo, Colo.; Howard of Colorado Springs, and Ralph and Mary Hanes of Des Moines besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
