James Love Gaston Aikin, a son of Robert and Esther [née Gaston] Aikin, was born in the bounds of Chester District in South Carolina. He was named for his maternal uncle, James Love Gaston. His mother and father were both from old revolutionary war patriot families. His father a veteran of that war. When he was a young man, his family emigrated west and settled in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

Like his ancestors before him, James L. G. Aikin served in the army as a Corporeal from December 1818 until June 1821 at Fort Hawkins, Georgia. He later served a Colonel during the Creek Indian war in 1836.

On the 4th of November 1834, James was grant 160.28 acres in Tuscaloosa County. In 1835, James L. G. Aikin married Miss Czarina Margaret Stewart, a daughter of Solomon and Sarah Stewart. This union had one son:
John Franklin (1835-1836)
