Esther Gaston, a daughter of William Audley Gaston and the former Miss Ann Porter, was born in the bounds of Richburg in Craven County, later to be Chester District of South Carolina. She was named for her paternal grandmother, Esther Waugh Gaston. Esther's family were of Scotch-Irish descent. Her paternal grandfather, John Gaston was the Justice of the Peace of this district and a well known land surveyor. Later during the American Revolution, The Gaston family would be loyal patriots to the call of freedom & independence.

Around 1790, Esther Gaston married Robert Aikin and would be blessed with seven known children. Robert Aikin had served in the South Carolina Militia during the revolution.

In the early 1820's, Esther and Robert Aikin emigrated west and settled in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. Here Esther lived out her days in Taylorville. She departed this life on the 29th of December 1837 and was laid to rest next to her beloved husband in the Aikin Family cemetery.

Esther Gaston Aikin's Last Will & Testament was signed on March 1st 1836 and probated in Tuscaloosa County.
