He was the son of Stephen Butler & Mary Ann Thistlethwayte. He married Fanny Catherine Brett in Victoria on 17 March 1868, and began farming his 120 acres of land which covered an area from Veyaness Road almost to West Saanich Road.
George & Fanny had 9 children before his death 7 Nov 1885 (death date on his grave marker does not match death date on the registration of his death).
