Professional Basketball Player. For seventeen seasons (1984 to 2001), he played at the small forward position in the National Basketball Association with the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Seattle SuperSonics, San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks. He played collegiate basketball at Longwood University in Virginia and achieved First-Team All-American and State Player of the Year honors. Selected by Portland during the 2nd round of the 1984 NBA Draft, he totaled 1,153 regular season games and compiled 11,825 points. Along with Clyde Drexler, Kersey formed an offensive force which propelled the Trail Blazers to two NBA Finals appearances (1990 and 1992). Individually, he topped the 1,000+ points total five-times which included his career-high 1,516 points during the 1987-1988 season. In 1999, he experienced a world championship with the NBA Title-winning San Antonio Spurs. After retiring as a player, he remained in the game and served as a team ambassador with the Portland Trail Blazers. Kersey spoke at a Portland-area high school event involving Black History Month one day before his sudden death.
