Lonnie (Buster) Freeman, Sr. was born to Jeremiah and Mary Freeman on August 17, 1917 in Clayton County. He departed this life on Friday, June 13, 2014. He was the fifth child of thirteen to this union. He joined at an early age Andrews Chapel UMC in Jonesboro, GA where he served in many capacities. He later joined and served in the United States Army in World War II from 1942 until 1946 and was in the 24th Infantry Division were he was a Private First Class. He saw action on the Pacific Island of Okinawa. Some of the Decorations and Citations he received while serving in the army are the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal AR 600-68, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star and the Battle Star Medal for bravery. He later retired from the Atlantic Army Depot in 1972 after 26 years of service.

He married Adelle Freeman in 1963 and into this union they had five children. Sherman Freeman; LaVictor (Curlyn) Freeman of Jonesboro, GA; Barry Freeman of Jonesboro, GA; Lonnie Freeman, Jr. of Jonesboro, GA; and Rev. Roderick (Sabrina) Freeman of Temple, GA.

At Andrews Chapel UMC and in the community he was known for his carpentry, such as building a parsonage at Andrews Chapel. He served on the trustee board for over fifty years, served on the Finance Committee, served with the United Methodist Men, Male Chorus, and he was very influential in building both sanctuaries and the family life center. His work at the church includes purchasing the first air conditioner the church had, building the organ loft, building the parsonage and the baptismal pool and buying part of the pulpit furniture.

A plaque with his name has been placed in the lobby of the church. He also, served in the Elijah Summit Lodge #309 in many of their positions. He was also known for his great sense of humor.
When asked why service to his church is so important to him, he stated "When I was in a foxhole on Okinawa, I promised God that if I made it back home safely I would serve Him for the rest of my life and that is what I have been doing."

He leaves to cherish in memory his loving wife, Mrs. Adelle Freeman, four sons, (one preceded him in death), one sister, Mrs. Louise (A.C.) Hutcherson, of Atlanta, GA, one brother, Mr. Robert Freeman, of St. Louis, MO, seventeen grandchildren, one great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
