Prominent Barre, Vermont businessman and civic leader. Civil War veteran. Educated at district schools and Newbury Academy. Labored in father's metal working shop. Clerk in Orvis French's store, 1844-54. Manager, Union Cooperative, 1854-60. Vermont House, 1859-60. Traveled to Mexico, 1860-62. Raised money to equip Barre recruits who joined Tenth Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1862. Enlisted in Thirteenth Regiment, commissioned as Regimental Quartermaster, September, 1862. Accompanied regiment to Washington, took part in city's defense. Discharged because of ill health, February, 1863. Manager, French's store, 1863-65. Member, board of directors, Orange County Bank after it moved from Chelsea to Barre. Appointed bank President, 1880. Successful investor in local real estate. Republican party activist, served as Barre Justice of the Peace and in other local offices. Temperance and anti-tobbacco activist. Donor and incorporator, Barre Academy. Personally supervised construction of academy building and furnishing of rooms. Treasurer, Goddard Seminary. Donated money to Barre for construction of free public library. Library constructed in 1907 and named for him. Aldrich Public Library still serves Barre City and Barre Town.
