Young Soldier in Camp Dies in Service of His Country
Word was received Friday. Nov. 15, announcing the death of Axel Granlund, son of Mrs. Annie Granlund of Ida Township, which occurred at Portsmouth, Va. Mr. Granlund was with the United States Marines, and two weeks before his death, while stationed at Parris Island, S.C., was taken ill, but word received by his mother stated that before he left Parris Island he was recovering. However, he was again taken ill along the journey and died shortly after the company reached Portsmouth.
Axel Granlund was born in Ida Township, February 9, 1892, and grew to manhood at that place. He enlisted in the Marines last June, wishing to be of the greatest service to his country. He was a young man of pleasing disposition and a favorite of all, and the community in which he grew to manhood will mourn his death.
The funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 22, from the Swedish Lutheran church, order of the Brotherhood of the American Yoemen of Garfield, of which the deceased was a member, having charge. Rev. A. Mattson officiated. The pall bearers were Paul Graunke, Gust Lund, Edwin Peterson, Simon Johnson, Herbert Strong, and Oscar Clark, all members of the lodge.
